Changes in Roman Catholic Attitudes toward Proselytism and Mission

Robert J. Schreiter *

The foundations of Roman Catholic theology of mission today can be understood only by tracing the dramatic changes in missiological thinking during the 20th century. This survey of these changes begins with the “period of certainty” (1919 until the beginning of Vatican Council II in 1962) and explains how shifts in theological thinking during the Council brought about a “period of missionary crisis” in the 1960s and 1970s. Since 1975, however, in the opinion of Father Schreiter, the Catholic Church has been experiencing a “rebirth of the missionary movement.”
